Poop bags

When my husband and I first got Zoey I went through a number of poop bags in search of the perfect one! During my first few months of looking for the right bag I was highly influenced and swayed by all of the cute and colorful poop bags and dispensers found at local pet stores. The ones with intricate designs and patterns (little bones, paw prints, flowers, etc) or bright and fun colors were the ones I was attracted to the most but as time progressed, more specifically after I opened up my dog walking business and started picking up tons of poop, I realized I needed something a little more eco-friendly!

Pet Food Review: Orijen Adult Dog If I had to choose one thing that my dog absolutely had to have it would definitely be a great quality food. Our Zoey has extremely sensitive skin and for the first 2 years of her life she was constantly itching, scratching, biting and licking every single part of her body that she could reach. It was terrible! My husband and I couldn’t stand it and we were constantly getting on to her about it especially when she would decide to start going at it in the middle of the night! I can’t tell you how many times we’ve both lost sleep because she just would not stop scratching at herself. At one point it got to be so bad that she was balding in certain spots and had red and raw skin. Unfortunately this seems to be very common with german shepherds, they’re apparently very prone to allergies, so I knew that it was very important that we find a good quality food. One that wouldn’t add to her already out of control skin issues, specifically one that was free of grains since I knew that this was a source for many skin allergies in dogs. I was so happy when I finally found Orijen’s Adult Dog Food and even more impressed after a few months of Zoey being on it that now I pretty recommend it to everyone I know. Family, friends, clients, random people on the street you name it and they’ve probably already heard about it from me! (You are welcome) Continue reading

Ruffwear Product Shoot SS11 - August 2010

Ruffwear Grip Trex:

Grip Trex dog boots set the standard in paw wear for dogs who hike, bike, run, or explore the great outdoors with their humans.

Review:

My husband ordered these boots from the Ruffwear  6-8 months ago for our 2 year old German Shepherd Zoey. We decided to try these out because she was having some serious issues with her paws losing hair, scabbing and being red and raw after just an hour or so of running around in the yard, dog park or after walks. We later came to find out that our pup is allergic to GRASS (yes grass! How does that even happen?!) but before we knew we ordered these guys in hopes that they would hep with her sore and sensitive feet.

The first time we put them on her was a sight to see! She didn’t like them very much and was walking pretty awkwardly. When we would take her out on walks she would either stop or just walk really slow and let out a random kick every now and then lol. She wasn’t used to them and they were probably pretty uncomfortable since this was the first time she’d ever worn shoes before. Once she got used to them walking in was a breeze! With the help of a powder medication from her vet her feet started to get better drastically, within a matter of weeks we could see improvements!

Ruffwear Product Shoot SS11 - August 2010

The first few weeks being that the shoes were brand new, Zoey got blisters, specifically blisters near her 1st digit also known as the dewclaw. For some reason the shoe just kept rubbing up against the dewclaws and causing really bad blisters and bleeding. We figured this was normal because the same thing happens with people when they wear new shoes. You have to break them in for a few weeks before they’re comfortable. That’s exactly what we did but because Zoey’s feet were already so sensitive we gave her breaks from wearing her shoes so as not to aggravate the skin on her paws anymore than it was.

Overall these shoes are pretty good. On a scale from 1-5, 5 being the best and 1 being the worst I would give these shoes a 4. The only reason why I wouldn’t give them an all out 5 was because they were causing her to get blisters which may or may not be due to the fact that she already has extremely sensitive feet. The other reason being that the shoes tend to move around when she’s been walking in them for a period of time. The bottom portion of the shoe will gradually rotate and if allowed will eventually end up on the top side of the foot. So you have to be careful to monitor the shoe and be sure to avoid this as it will be very uncomfortable for your dog. You should also make sure that when you secure the boots that you secure them as tightly as possible so they can’t move around. And by tight I mean circulation-cutting tight. I was honestly a little concerned about how tight we had the boots on her but that’s the only way we managed to keep them from rotating. Whether or not it was uncomfortable we have no idea.

Unfortunately we discontinued using them because of Zoey’s extremely sensitive feet. We’re waiting on our boot liners  (socks) so we can hopefully reduce the formation of blisters when she wears her shoes. If all goes well she can go back to wearing her shoes whenever we go to the park and hopefully when we start hiking!

So I’ve recently stumbled upon these Bully Sticks, about 2-3 weeks ago, and I have to say my dog really, really enjoys them and they work! I’ve tried several chews and toys for her that include: greenies, dental chews, bone marrow, and kongs, and other plastic chew toys but none of them seemed to interest her long enough to get a good chew-in. They were either too big for her to maneuver in her paws and with her teeth or simply just didn’t taste very appealing. I will say that our dog is a bit of a picky eater, or maybe she just has a preference for what she likes? Whatever the case we went through a lot of products before we finally found this one! She definitely enjoys chewing on them, must taste very good, and gets a good cleaning in. I’ve literally seen pieces of plaque and tartar left behind after she’s chewed her bully stick for a while.

This is what they look like:

Bully Sticks

What are they?

Bully sticks also known as beef pizzle, pizzle sticks, steer stix, beef sticks are actually bull penises (WHAT??? GROSS!) Yes that’s a little bit shocking. I was a little grossed out but once I got over the initial shock I came to realize that this is still an amazing product.

Bully sticks are:

– Odor free (majority, although some do contain low odor)

– Sourced from USA cattle

(the ones I purchased from my local pet boutique actually came from free-range cattle which is always nice)

– 100% NATURAL, single ingredient BEEF product

– Completely & easily digestible (unlike a lot of rawhides on the market)

– Low in fat

How are Bully Sticks made?

Bully sticks are first removed, cleaned and then hung vertically to allow the draining of fluids contained within the bull penis, this process is what permits bully sticks to be odor free. These sticks are then stretched, twisted, or braided to provide different variations in shape, then dried and may be smoked for flavor. Being that these Bully Sticks are 100% natural, thickness, shape, and color may vary.

The Bully Sticks I purchased for our German Shepherd Zoey were the 12″ size and straight. I wasn’t exactly sure if she would like them so I bought 2  small ones with a simple shape, just in case. She was hesitant at first and just sniffed it for a while and then eventually she started going to town on it! She looked like she was having a hard time placing it in her paws and chewing it but eventually she figured it out and demolished the thing! I think it took about an hour for her to get down to about half way on the stick? She ate the whole thing within a day, so I’m going to go ahead and say she really liked it.

There are a number of places to buy these Bully Sticks from, online as well as in-store.

I would recommend checking out your local pet boutique’s or buying them online. It would probably be best to buy them in bulk as they can be very expensive if bought separate. The ones I bought were $7/each. There are of course larger and smaller sizes to fit each individual dog.

If you have a picky eater or a dog who just hasn’t found the right chew for them I would definitely consider checking these things out! They seem to be the new rave after all the horror stories about Rawhides.

Good Luck!

– Lori
