Poop bags

When my husband and I first got Zoey I went through a number of poop bags in search of the perfect one! During my first few months of looking for the right bag I was highly influenced and swayed by all of the cute and colorful poop bags and dispensers found at local pet stores. The ones with intricate designs and patterns (little bones, paw prints, flowers, etc) or bright and fun colors were the ones I was attracted to the most but as time progressed, more specifically after I opened up my dog walking business and started picking up tons of poop, I realized I needed something a little more eco-friendly!

vaccine

1. Pets must be vaccinated every single year.

FALSE! Contrary to popular belief this is not true!

Once you’ve gone through the process of getting your pet their puppy/kitty vaccines or their initial vaccines then there’s no need for them to be re-vaccinated every year afterwards. There is a wealth of research that supports this and even goes as far as stating that just a single vaccination  can provide years if not lifelong immunity. There are some who believe that continuously vaccinating your pet will provide a stronger and/or longer immunity and that is also not the case. Constant vaccination instead tacks on the immune system essentially making it weaker and more susceptible to a host of problems such as allergies, autoimmune diseases, arthritis, tumors, seizures and more. You can go as far as saying that pet vaccines are virtually the same as human vaccines in the sense that humans don’t need to be re-vaccinated every year either so then why would your pet?

Also, it isn’t recommended to vaccinate for Boredetella, Corona, Lepto and Lyme disease unless these diseases are endemic locally or at a specific kennel.

2. Vaccines are extremely safe.

FALSE!

Vaccines are not extremely safe and there is always a risk when it comes to vaccinating your pet. You never know if your pet may have some sort of allergic reaction to the vaccine or worse if he/she may die because of them. As stated above your pet may become more susceptible to a plethora of problems if their immune system is constantly being bombarded.

This is especially important to note if you booster your pet regularly whether it be every 6 months or 1-3 years.

3. My veterinarian knows best.

FALSE!

Your veterinarian may not always knows what’s best for your pet. One of two things may come into play in regards to your pets vaccines: 1) your vet may not be up to date on the literature and may not know the many risks of vaccinating so frequently or 2) your vet may be up to date with the literature but may still choose to vaccinate frequently.

Some veterinarians out there are very much “old school” so they don’t always follow up with changing trends and schedules when it pertains to certain aspects of their practice one of those being vaccines. Whereas other veterinarians do their research and know what is up to date but yet choose not to change their practices. (These are the ones you should be most concerned about.)

One important thing to note about vaccines and the pharmaceutical industry is that veterinarians (and in turn the pharmaceutical companies) make a significant amount of revenue from vaccinating pets every single year. Quoted from an article from Dr.Karen Becker over at Mercola Healthy Pets:

“Estimates are that removing the one-year rabies vaccination/office visit for dogs alone could reduce a veterinarian’s income from $87,000 to $25,000. And this example involves just one variety of one vaccine, and only dogs.”

With that in mind now you can see how this can very lucrative to a practice that chooses to do it.

How often do you vaccinate your pet? Or do you not vaccinate them at all?

If you ever travel to Miami Beach and want to find a nice spot for a leisurely walk (with or without your furry friend, preferably with) I recommend visiting the South Pointe Boardwalk. This boardwalk is located on the southern most tip of South Beach (1 Washington Avenue), in one direction it leads to the beach while in the other it will lead you to the shops on 5th street. While walking on this boardwalk you’ll be able to enjoy a number of things: a few of the local restaurants like  Smith & Wollensky, Monty’s, and Texas de Brazil, the beautiful marina equipped with a variety of boats (you can even go onto the dock and check out a few of them up close and personal, just be sure to enter through the guest gate) and also the off-leash dog park (which is why you should definitely bring your furry friend)!

If you’re a Miami Beach local then you know about the boardwalk and you love it and if you’re not then you should definitely visit this boardwalk if you’re ever in town. It is one of the many places on South Beach where you can see and be seen.

I personally love to stop by the boardwalk in the early mornings or at sunset so I can watch the sun rise or set. It’s amazing! I also enjoy taking my pooches on walks here as well since there are always pet parents with their furry friends passing through. The pups especially love coming here because of the off leash dog park that can be found. They’re always so excited once we start nearing the park and always meet one friend or another whom we see on a regular basis when visiting. Both pet parents and pups are so friendly and welcoming, it’s really more than just a community out here, it’s like a family!

If you decide not to bring your furry friend with you or if you don’t have one you can always just stroll the boardwalk either by walking, running, bicycling and/or skating. Just be aware of your surroundings so you don’t run or get anyone run over, this location is notorious for cyclists and traffic can be a little intense. And if you’re not into any of those things just stop by one of the many restaurants along the boardwalk and relax with a drink and some good food.

Oh and don’t forget to check out the amazing beach!

Have you visited the South Pointe Boardwalk before?

Why You Shouldn’t Use Family/Friends as Pet Sitters

I remember my college days living in Denver, CO and traveling periodically to Miami to visit family and friends during my school breaks. It was always such a hassle when I had to leave because not only did I have to book flights, pack and run around an airport like a maniac but I also had to make arrangements for my cat every time I took a trip. My go-to person would be a school friend simply because I knew her, trusted her and didn’t really think I needed a pet sitter. I honestly had never given it much thought either and figured it’s just a person who will feed and clean out my cats litter box while I’m gone.

pet

It’s not rocket science, anyone can do it… Right? Wrong. As much as I appreciated my friends for taking care of my little rugrat while I was out of town I always came home disappointed in one way or another. But I guess this should be expected as I never paid them for the work they did or in my case the favor they were doing me. I just assumed everyone was as OCD as I am and gave 110% to anything it was they were doing. Having been let down so many times by my friends in regards to to the care of my little fur ball I finally decided to hire a pet sitter and boy did I see a remarkable difference! Here are some of the more notable things that stood out to me: (Keep in mind my trips were typically a week or two in duration) – Bowls were washed and sanitized – Area surrounding litter box was swept and tidy – Excess fur was swept/cleaned up – Hair balls messes were cleaned up – Daily updates on my cat were sent (which was such a relief because I worried about him all the while I was on vacation and felt guilty for leaving him to begin with! So it was nice to know that someone was there hanging out with him and letting me know how he was adjusting while I was gone)

Clearly he was adjusting well without me!

One of the things that frustrated me the most about having family/friends take care of my cat was the fact that I couldn’t nag to them about all the things they did wrong for fear of hurting their feelings and also because they were doing it as a favor to me and weren’t even getting paid, but with a pet sitter I could easily communicate what I wanted and what I expected from them without having to feel like a diva or guilty for having such high expectations. What can I say? I have standards in regards to the way I want my kids to be treated and taken care of and that’s something that this particular pet sitter understood from the get-go. She assured me over and over again that my cat would be in great hands (because I literally spent 30 minutes grilling her with questions and scenarios… that’s just my OCD and paranoia kicking in), she made sure to provide all of her credentials as well as qualifying experience and was overall very personable, professional (which I extremely appreciated given the informal type of business pet sitting is, that shocked me altogether) trusting and competent to do the job right! Since hiring my very first pet sitter I’ve never again asked any family/friends to watch any of my fur ball family members, which has grown in size by 2: Zoey our German Shepherd and Oakley our domestic shorthair aka street cat. I’ve been extremely pleased with the quality of service I’ve received from various pet sitters in the last few years and honestly couldn’t fathom asking any of my family/friends to care for them knowing now what I know! Have you been debating whether or not to hire your first pet sitter! Or are you a seasoned customer with a bad experience? Hey Friends!

As most of you might know this December TLS hosted it’s second annual Hungry Bowl Pet Food drive! It was a great success and we were able to raise 277 lbs of pet food for Miami-Dade Animal Services. This year our efforts were combined with those of a local pet sitter in the area: Carolina Rodriguez over at PawSitting in Miami, and with her help we were able to reach and surpass our goal for 2013!

We’d like to give a HUGE thanks to all of our participating locations who allowed us to set up our donation boxes in their stores as well as all of you PET LOVERS who generously donated all sorts of food for either dogs, cats, puppies and/or kittens. We had a great variety of food that was donated and we are 99.9% sure that the pets of MDAS has an awesome Christmas feast this year!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
